Well, I just got back from the beach a couple of hours ago. What a great weekend. We arrived at Rota friday night and checked in to the Navy Lodge. We ran into a small problem, Rolando and I were planning to share a room and the lady at the desk informed us that it was not allowed for two people to share a room at the Navy Lodge. So, Rolando had to get his own room, not a showstopper. I went to my room and, WOW! It was a suite, it had a living room, seperate bedroom and a small kitchenette. Now, had we known better and kept our mouths shut, we could have sent Rolando around to the side door and he could have slept on the couch in my living room. Oh well, now we know for next time.
We met in the lobby about 8:00 and headed downtown. We decided to try the traditional Spanish way of spending a night on the town. We went to about 4 different restaraunts eating tapas before going walking around. Tapas is like a small portion of food and it's a good way to try out different restaraunts as well as different foods. The first place we went we only had something to drink and then left. The second place we stopped we had fried octopus, now for all of you that are gagging right about now, I have to admit, it was pretty good. The third place we went we had squid, and the last place we went we had clams that were great. I had never eaten any of those things but I liked the clams so much that we went back the next night and ordered two plates each.
After dinner we decided to walk around town. We left the last restaruant and headed to a church that was built to honor one of the crew of Christopher Columbus. It was a very ornate place and there is a very large copper statue of one of the ships, not sure if it was the Pinta, Nina or the Santa Maria, but it was pretty impressive. Just down the street was a lighthouse and we walked down and checked that out. We walked around town and didn't get back to the base until 3:00 a.m.
Saturday I got up around 11:00 a.m and gave Rolando a call. We went up to the Navy Exchange and I got a haircut and then grabbed a Subway sandwich. I think my body wanted something that was a little less exotic when it came to food. As soon as we were done, we set off walking to the beach. We spent a few hours there and then headed back to get cleaned up so we could go find something to eat. Once again we decided to go to the various Tapas places to eat. I decided to go with something a little more on the normal side and ordered some beef con ensalsa. It was great, but my favorite was still the clams so we decided to skip any other places and just go back there. We went to an upscale night time hangout at the marina to finish out our Satuday night. It's pretty cool to sit up on the balcony and watch the boats go in and out of the harbor.
Sunday we checked out of our rooms in record time. We thought check out was at 1200 but it was actually at 1100.
The reason I titled this "Almost" perfect weekend is because the only thing it needed to make it perfect would be to have Andria here to experience all this with me. Well, it's time to close and hit the sack. Hope everyone had a good weekend!
