Christmas program...

Tonight was Connor's Christmas program at the performing arts center. The entire 2nd grade was up there singing and dancing, it was great! The program was supposed to have been Tuesday but since the weather was bad, they rescheduled for tonight. It did my heart good to hear the kids singing, as it has been difficult to get in the Christmas spirit; what with all the negative news these days, the economy is bad, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. etc. It just seems so hard to focus on anything positive. However, it's hard to focus on anything negative when that many little ones start singing Christmas songs. There was plenty of dancing and hand motions going on too, you could tell that the kids worked really hard getting ready for tonight and they did an awesome job

Connor gave me quite a scare tonight during the program. One minute he was standing on the back row of the risers and the next minute he was gone. I saw kids around him looking back and I thought for sure he had passed out and fallen off the back. I went running out of the auditorium and when I walked through the stage door, I met Mrs Turner face to face. I think I have said this before, but Mrs Turner is an awesome teacher, you can tell that she really cares about her students. I'm glad that Connor has her this year. Anyway, she handed me his sweater and told me not to worry, he had not passed out, but had started getting overheated so he just ducked down and climbed off the back of the risers. He's a pretty smart cookie to listen to his body when it is telling him something is wrong. I was proud of him! Mrs. Turner pointed to the mens dressing room, where I found him sitting on a chair in the corner. He was as white as a ghost and looked as though he would pass out at any second but as we sat and talked his color came back and he said he felt better. His little episode didn't keep him down too long because in a matter of minutes he was asking if I would take him to La Fiesta for mexican food. I agreed and we ended up taking both sets of grandparents with us as well. It was good to get everyone together. Sorry there are no pictures of the program, I just ordered a new camera tonight so next year there will be pictures, I promise. Speaking of pictures, if you want to see Mr Philip Darr when he was a kid, be sure to check out his blog http://www.upwardpoint.blogspot.com/

If you are having trouble getting into the Christmas spirit, just remember to be thankful for the little things, sometimes all it takes is listening to a child sing a Christmas song or just taking a minute to remember what the season is all about, and suddenly, your heart seems to change. It's too bad that we can't seem to keep the Christmas spirit throughout the year. Even in the toughest of times, during Christmas, you always hear of people helping other people. Be sure to tell someone Merry Christmas! not Happy Holidays! Sorry, but Christmas is Christmas, not XMAS or the Winter Holiday formerly known as Christmas; you know kinda like the artist formerly known as Prince? Anyway, I'm beginning to ramble so just try telling someone Merry Christmas, it may be just what you need to kickstart your Christmas Spirit!

You are so right. If you have kids or a kid, you need to go see them sing in their programs. You will be so proud that you will bubble up like a big old Alka Selser. Let's all get in the Christmas Spirit!!! Maybe we need to quit focusing on the news and just enjoy Christmas!

Merry Christmas Mike and Fam.
