Well, I'm sorry to report that no deer died by my hand this weekend. No big deal, I had a great weekend with Jackie, Jessie, and Connor. I was expecting to bow hunt this weekend but Jackie informed me it was blackpowder season so he scored me a blackpowder rifle to use for the weekend. I think I'm going to buy the gun from the guy that let me borrow it. Thanks Jackie!
Friday night Andria and I went to dinner with Philip and Kelly and then we drove around town for a while. I had everything loaded in the truck and since we didn't get back super late, Connor and I decided to drive up to the cabin and stay two nights. We got to the cabin and talked with Jessie and Jackie for a while until we all yawned about the same time and decided that morning was going to come really early and we should get some sleep. I think we ended up going to bed around 1:00 A.M. I don't know how much sleep Connor got, he was busy looking out the window from his perch up in the top bunk. Now, for those of you who don't know, Connor is really afraid of dogs. Big dogs, little dogs, live dogs, dead dogs, it doesn't really matter, he's just not too crazy about dogs, kinda the way I am about snakes! Anyway, there were two lab puppies that were hanging around the cabin and I kept hearing the blinds click as he seperated them throughout the night to see if the dogs were still on the porch. It's funny because Connor says he likes dogs but when faced with them in reality, he acts like he is afraid. I think he likes the concept of a dog without actually having a dog. I will say that he had a breakthrough this weekend, he actually touched one of the puppies and he constantly wanted to know what the dogs were doing. I'm hoping that curiosity is the first step to him getting over his fear of dogs, I would really like to get him and Lily a dog of their own, OK, who am I kidding, I want a dog too!
Saturday morning we got up around 6:00, got dressed, and headed to the woods. Connor and I were hunting out of a ground blind and we didn't see any deer. By about 8:30, Con was really getting fidgety so we headed back to the cabin. I laid down and he watched cartoons and went up and down the ladder to his bunk at least 50 times while eating every type of junk food that we had available.
Satuday afternoon we had to make a run to Clarksville to get some caps for the blackpowder gun. The caps that we had were the wrong size and so it's a good thing we didn't see a deer during our morning hunt because we wouldn't have been able to shoot anyway. Connor and I went to Nitelite outdoors in Clarksville and he loved it. I turned him lose in the store and he kept coming over to where I was and saying "Hey dad, come look at this!" He was so excited to show me everything from coon hunting lights to turkey calls. (He would make a great salesman for them!) Needless to say, we stayed a little longer than I intended. We finally headed back to the cabin and went out for an afternoon hunt. After a couple hours Connor said he didn't feel well so we headed back to the cabin. He continued to not feel good, so I called Andria and she met me at County Line school so he could go home. He cried a lot because he wanted to stay, but it was for the best that he went home, he was exhausted! Checking on dogs all night and eating nothing but junk food will make a little guy tired! I think he was glad he came home because when I got home today, he was in a great mood.
Sunday morning we all got up early and hunted until 9:30 A.M. Jackie had 4 deer come close to his stand and Jessie and I both had deer come into our set ups before it was light enough to see. At least it was promising to hear a deer come close to the stands. Sunday afternoon, Jackie and I did some scouting and moved a stand to another location to get ready for modern gun season in two weeks. This will be the first ever "Leadslingers Deer Camp" Where the motto is, "The lead's a flyin, but nothin's dyin'...It should be a great time!
In my quest to find a great closing line, my friend Philip has suggested a line from the old Bugs Bunny cartoons so I'll throw that one on you for tonight.
b'dee, b'dee, b'dee...That's All Folks!
